Behind your home, your automobile is your one major investment in life. And like your home, you need to take care of it so that it can continue to provide you with service for many years to come. While eventually most cars will need auto body repair, there are a few things you should know in order to keep your car out of the repair shop. The following are a few quick preventive maintenance tips to keep your car on the road and out of the repair shop unnecessarily for years to come.

1. Keep your car fueled up and every 5th fill-up, it is advisable to use premium fuel. Even a half gas tank can starve your cars of the fuel that it needs. Feed your car by keeping the fuel flow pressure high and every once in a while treat it to the good stuff.

2. Have your oil changed every 3,000 miles. Some newer vehicles can go 5,000 miles without the needed oil change, but don’t assume your car is one of them. Better to take it to a professional who can tell you exactly when you ought to have your oil regularly changed. This is essential for the life and efficiency of your engine. Every 10,000 miles check the air filters.

3. Maintain proper tire pressure and make sure that your tires do not get over worn. Check for damage and wear to your tires during your oil change and have your tires rotated to extend your tire life. Improperly inflated tires can cause excessive wear to your vehicle, and balding tires reduce your cars safety. Check that your tires are properly inflated correctly, rotated and have plenty of tread life.

4. Stay the speed limit. Driving your car at excessive high speeds increases wear and tear on all parts of your car. You are not at NASCAR and moderate speeds not only ease wear on your car but increase the safety of the handling of your vehicle. Not to mention, greatly reduces your chance of getting a speeding ticket.

5. Keep your car protected from the elements. Keep your car in a garage or covered to protect the exterior from excessive exposure to the elements. Keep your car washed on a regular basis and keep the interior clean. While this does not add to the performance of your car it does make your car more enjoyable to drive and preserves its value if you ever decide to part with the car.

6. Be mindful of the region of the country you drive your car. If you are in extreme cold or extreme hot or extreme altitude climates you need to know what special measures you need to take to protect your car. And if ever in doubt, contact your local car auto body repair or maintenance experts.
